The Guinea Worm

Guinea worm is a parasitic worm that infects, grows and matures in humans. The worms are native to Africa, but can be found in remote villages in the Rajastan desert of India and Yemen.

Guinea worm larvae infect water fleas that live in standing water. Those drinking the water become infected. After a period of a year worms reach adulthood and mate with the others inside. They pierce through the intestinal wall. Males of the species die and females travel through the body. They mature to a length of 3 metres ending up near the surface of the skin. Commonly in the lower limbs. They begin to cause irritaion, burning blisters and painful swelling. Carriers feel most soothed in the water where their blisters then burst. The worm comes out and releases millions of larvae into the water. Inside the water the cycle begins again where the larvae are swallowed by water fleas.

Carriers may have a fever, swelling, severe pain and blisters when the worm is ready to come out. The worm can slowly be removed by winding it around a stick and pulling out bit by bit once the blisters have burst over a period of weeks to months. Surgery can also help with a dose of antibiotics.

Hairy Lobster

This newly spotted (a few months ago) hairy lobster was found 2300 metres under the South Pacific Ocean South of Easter Island.

It has been named the 'Yeti Crab' around about 15 cm long and of a white color. Its pincers are covered in furry or hair like strands.

It happens to be blind with only the vestige of a membrane in place of eyes. From observation it may be a carnivor, consuming bacteria that may live in its furry hair like strands.

These guys are such a special new find they have had a new family created for them named Kiwaida, derived from Kiwa - the goddess of crusaceans in Polynesian mythology.

Lost Jewels

Turn up your sound for this. This is a Belgium chat show, the interviewer is interviewing a man whom recently had an operation. Unfortunatley his 'jewels' were removed by accident during the operation. (Dont worry that it is in a different language.)

Craniopagus Parasiticus

This little girl Egyptian Girl is Manar Maged. She suffered a rare birth defect called Carniopagus Parasiticus. A rare birth defect where the embryo begins to split into an identical twin but the process is not completed leaving the other twin basically in an unfinished state. Dear Manar did have a separation operation (which was successful) but later died of a brain infection. Her unfinished twin still blinked, smiled, looked around and slept independant of her sister. She had a fully functional second brain. This is a very rare birth defect and Manar is the only case to have survived the operation up until the brain infection.

I need some of these!!!

I would like to find the inventor of these wonderful knitted creations!! They are fantastic.

Special Baby

This special baby was born in Charikot headquarters of Dolakha district. It weighed 2kg and was born a little later than the average nine month gestation period. Its mother was perfectly healthy, suffering no ailments. Having had two normal daughters already, her husband is very happy his wife is ok. The small town was extremely curious about the baby and many hurried to catch a glimpse, police were called in to control the villagers.

A nurse attending the birth mentioned that there was nothing that could be done to save the baby. I have not been able to find a medical term for the reasons of a baby born with these features. I am still researching. At a guess it may be Anencephaly (absence of the scalp, forebrain etc. The cephalic end of the neural tube doesn't close. Causing eyes to protrude from the head without the skull and a sunken neck) Babies may be stillborn or have basic abilities to breath but often die hours after birth. Unable to ever gain consciousness.

Embryo removed from 35 Year old man

Igor Namyatov a tractor driver, 35 years old, first started having problems at the age of 15; experiencing pains in his back. Doctors played it down as to him having a fatty tumor.
Twenty years later the pains returned and Igor had an operation to have a presumed tuma removed. Instead his little twin brother (an unborn embryo twin bubby) was removed!

Clycopia

This is a kitten (from the Ragdoll breed) that was born with just one eye and has no nose. It only lived for one day.
Cyclopia is a birth deformity that fuses the two eyeballs into one large one. It may form below the nose or the nose may not be present. The forebrain never forms into its second hemisphere. The likely result is stillbirth or death within hours. Toxins may cause this or defective genes. The toxins disturb the normal flow of cholesterol in cells. This may halt the signals involving important chemicals e.g. a protein called Sonic Hedgehog (Shh). The toxins can come from plants ie: corn lily. Ewes that eat this plant have a high instance of cyclopia.

Star Nosed Moles

Star nosed moles are the size of hamsters. They have eleven pairs of long receptors that protrude from their nose. These are touch organs that hold 25,000 receptors called Eimer's organs, humans only have 17,000 in their fingertips. They are very sensitive and use the star for sensing whilst tunnelling and defining the right food. The moles brain senses the information picked up from the nose within a twentieth of a millisecond. This helps the mole determine whether the morsel he has found is worthy of eating.

A Blob Sculpin

On the sea floor of the deep sea (Gorda Escarpment off Northern California) gather creatures called Blob Sculpin. Scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute found an undersea nursery of the guys that rest on their eggs till they hatch. Not a very usual thing for fish to do. There are a group of octopus's near by who do the same. They seem to like the hot spots of the area. The fish themselves are not quite wrong as such, actually quite amazing. But I add all types of wierd and wonderful things.

Naked Mole-Rats

Naked mole-rats have no hair at all. They have large teeth with a skin flap protecting from dirt. When hunger sets in they eat roots underground and tubers. Being smart enough not to eat them all so they grow back the following year. Their teeth help protect them against their large predator the snake. Scissor like actions are used to ward off nasties underground.

Naked mole-rats can live in groups up to 100 and they do have a queen. She checks on her burrowing workers and security soldiers (these rats don't work) and she is much bigger and heavier. The workers dig away to create complex burrow systems in hard clay soil. Inside their burrows they easily move forwards and backwards and can even sommersault. The critters are found mainly around central and eastern Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya.

When disturbed or bothered naked mole-rats will honk or squeak. And being naked they only come out in the early morns or evening to protect their wrinkly skin.

Diamanda Galas Concert: Adelaide Town Hall, Sunday night

Last night we bought tickets to see Diamanda Galas at Adelaide Town Hall. It was absolutley amazing. This is the second concert we have been lucky to see and well worth it. Here is a lady who's voice range is four octaves. We were entertained for well over an hour and ten minutes of several severe emotions intertwined into extreme vocals and stunning sounding piano melodies. Quite frightening at times but stunningly peaceful at others. It has taken me ten years to accept she wont summon devils around me when I hear her music, and Im glad I stuck round.
